Nexans Continues Its Commitment to Canada

Nexans' Fergus, Ontario plant today

June 5, 2016

Celebrating 50 years in Fergus, ON in June, Nexans has reinforced its commitment to Canada with a $15 million dollar investment in warehousing logistics and new equipment.

The increased capacity allows Nexans more capacity in the production of low voltage residential, commercial, and industrial cables, and a fundamental change in the way the company produces its wire products.

A community open house will be held on Saturday, June 11 from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm.

This technological edge and change in process did not come without the understanding the plant’s run rates would fall during the changeover, and the team at Nexans had to roll up their sleeves to make this change happen. The result: a state of the art wire plant.

The additions to the plant (a new warehouse facility on the north side) enlarged the facility from 285,000 to 385,000 square feet. A 100,000 square foot outside storage was added as well. This allowed the Milton warehouse facility to be moved to Fergus, and now the Fergus facility boasts a staff of 220.

The 50-year-old plant (shown here under construction in 1965/66) has had its share of continual change and focus.

Its first full day of production was August 6, 1966. After Canada Wires’ acquisition of Essex in 1968 the plant became Canwirco and then again changed names after successive reorganizations to Alcatel and now Nexans.

The plant is located at 670 Gzowski Street in Fergus.
