New technologies and approaches are altering the home energy management (HEM) market. Ideas from a decade ago when advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) projects drove much of the activity are now mature, such as home energy reports (HERs). Such approaches are not being completely replaced, but other technologies in front of and behind the meter have taken on greater importance. New channels to engage with customers on HEM topics have emerged, such as voice assistants like Amazon Alexa and Google Home.
