Deniers Beware

Global Warming

Jim Taggart

It’s time to stop debating climate change and start doing something about it. Whether man-made or a natural process, global warming is a reality. Even if you remain one of the diehard sceptics who refuse to believe that global warming will harm the ecosystem, you cannot deny the fact that we are all facing more unusual climate conditions. Strange in the sense that our weather is more unstable and we are all prone to more environmental disasters.

The future of our existing Canadian environment and wildlife is being threatened. Polar bears are not the only northern life form struggling to adapt: lake trout, salmon, loons, warblers and even our sugar maple trees are in danger.

Please, let me assure you, I am not a member of Green Peace, I don’t chain myself to 200-300 year old oak trees that are about to be cut down. I consider myself a realist and a concerned Canadian conservationist. If we don’t change our current wasteful habits, we are going to damage our country for future generations.

Now the good news: the Canadian electrical industry is positioned to help make a real difference in the battle against global warming. Our push to embrace sustainability is offering real solutions in the areas of:

• energy efficiency

• renewable power

• recycling / extended producer responsibility

I’m extremely proud of the solutions and the contributions that are being made by our members. Many EFC members are leading the way with innovative new products and solutions, building and utilizing energy efficient facilities and helping to educate consumers. Many members have discovered that selling and marketing positive green solutions can lead to green, hard cash!

And even if I’m all wrong and the sceptics correct, what’s wrong with embracing a conservation mentality? The following outcomes seem to be pretty appealing:

• creating less garbage and disposing of it properly

• creating a safer and healthier environment

• designing and manufacturing products that use fewer resources

• developing cleaner power

• leaving more resources for future generations

Even if global warming is an elaborate hoax or a brief weather aberration, helping to create a better, cleaner world isn’t a bad thing.
