Updated Ontario Electrical Safety Code

By being incorporated by reference into regulations by Canadian provinces and territories, the requirements and guidance of the Canadian Electrical Code (CEC), Part I, are mandatory across our country.

In Ontario, the law requires that all electrical installations meet the Ontario Electrical Safety Code (OESC) requirements. On May 1, 2025, the new 2024 edition of OESC will come into effect. It consists of the 2024 edition of the CEC, Part I, and several Ontario-specific amendments. The key updates in this version  include plan review requirements for electric vehicle supply equipment installations and stand-alone electric power-generating equipment and systems, installation requirements of energy storage systems at residential occupancies, and specific conditions for permitting insulated conductors within an enclosure. These requirements aim to enhance electrical safety and help better protect electrical workers and the public in the province.
