Remote Microgrids Now Make up More than Half of All Microgrids Deployed Globally

Remote Microgrids

Dec 14 2015

Navigant Research’s ninth edition of the Microgrid Deployment Tracker underscores microgrids as a global phenomenon, with details of microgrid projects deployed in over 100 countries. On a regional basis, the largest change in this update is a dramatic expansion of the list of countries with microgrids. While the United States still leads all countries in terms of both capacity and total number of projects, Asia Pacific is moving into a market leader role.

As of 4Q 2015, Navigant Research has identified 1,437 microgrid projects worldwide, representing 13,400.5 MW of operating, under development, and proposed microgrid capacity. The two most noteworthy additions to this database were 83 projects in New York, funded by the NY Prize competition, and a portfolio of 816 MW near the Arctic Circle in the far east of Russia. Meanwhile, ABB leads all vendors in terms of total microgrid capacity and Schneider Electric leads in terms of the total number of microgrid projects in its development pipeline.

The leading resource choices are diesel in terms of capacity and solar PV in terms of being included in microgrid projects. The remote segment is the clear market leader in terms of both capacity and number of projects.
This Navigant Research report tracks data on known grid-tied and remote microgrid projects in the proposal, planning, and deployed stages in six geographic areas.

The report covers seven microgrid segments:
•    commercial/industrial
•    community
•    utility distribution
•    institutional/campus
•    military
•    remote
•    direct current (DC) systems
Specific information is provided on the capacity and project numbers by distributed generation type, energy storage type, top 10 countries, top 10 U.S. states, and top 10 microgrid companies. The Tracker report also details the rated capacity, duration, and types of energy storage for each project and breaks out data by world region and microgrid segment.

Key questions addressed:
•    Which market segments globally boast the largest identified online microgrid capacity?
•    Which regions of the world can claim the largest microgrid portfolio across all market segments?
•    What is the most common form of distributed generation deployed in microgrids?
•    How many microgrids identified in the database include energy storage (and which technologies)?
•    Which of the over 100 countries deploying microgrids can lay claim to the most individual projects?
•    Which of the over 100 countries deploying microgrids can lay claim to the largest microgrid capacity?
